NAME Matthew Taylor JOB Agronomist COMPANY Frontier AGE 25 SALARY* Expected starting salary £20 - 25,000 *industry average

What is ‘Agronomy’?

Agronomy is using scientific knowledge about plants and soil to grow the best possible crops.

As an Agronomist, what do you do?

I work for Frontier, a leading crop inputs and support services business. My role involves dealing with growers on a daily basis, looking at their fields and helping them plan their crops.

I offer advice on agrochemicals, fertiliser, seed, game cover and novel solutions like variable rate fertiliser or drilling. I specialise in potato growing.

What qualifications do you need?

I have a degree in Ecology with Biology, and Agronomy in general does require a strong scientific background.

Is your job satisfying?

Very – the best bit is watching a crop growing and knowing that it’s your expertise that helped produce it.

What’s it like working outdoors?

I work outside every day, in all kinds of weathers. The skies in Norfolk are big, the farmers are great to work with, and I’m really grateful that I don’t have to spend my life in an office. The hours can be long, but if the sun’s shining it’s not too bad.

What’s your long-term aim?

I’m really happy with my career. I would like to become a well respected and established Agronomist with great working relationships with my customers.

Any tips?

Don’t be afraid to really push yourself.
