NAME Jonathan Garnham JOB Director & General Manager COMPANY JCB Power Products AGE 34 SALARY* TBC *industry average

What do you do day-to-day in your job?

I have global responsibility for our Diesel Generator and Lighting Tower business. The company employs 19 people and I report to the Group CEO.  I am responsible for all operations of the business.  This starts with new product development, prioritising which products we develop first, deciding the markets we launch them in and how.

I work very closely with our suppliers and negotiate new contracts, as well as maintain all supplier relationships.  I manage 8 regional Sales Managers and work with them and our dealer network to ensure that they meet their targets. We also work to appoint new dealers where appropriate.  I have to work with our HR team to recruit new people where required as the business expands.

To achieve the above, I spend a lot of time travelling to see our factories, dealers and customers around the world. I will make 2 overseas trips every month and visit up to 20 different countries each year.  I deliver the annual budget for the business and report our financial performance every month to the board.

What other jobs have you had?

Since I left University I have held the following positions:
1. Regional Aftermarket Business Manager
2. National Accounts Manager
3. General Manager – Waste Recycling and Demolition
4. General Manager – UK Dealer Sales
5. General Manager – Sales Operations

Did you consider any other career paths?

I was sponsored by JCB as an undergraduate at university and was delighted to join the company when I graduated. My career at JCB has always moved very quickly, so I have never really considered other options.

What do you like most about your job?

I get huge satisfaction from getting things done, making a difference and developing people. Everyday has a different challenge and opportunity and there is nothing better than grasping them and moving things forwards.

I am based at JCB’s World Headquarters in Staffordshire, UK. I am fortunate to travel to many countries around the world with business. I spend a lot of time in the Middle East, India, Africa, and throughout Europe.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years' time?

I would like to continue to develop my career with JCB, run some of the larger business and expand our sales around the world.

What one piece of advice would you give people trying to get into agriculture?

The more you put into a company then the more you get out, work hard and enjoy what you do.
